New Ash Bench

What’s the recycling story of the new ash bench?

In the summer of 2020, ash tree #1132 facing the sports pitches unfortunately had to be cut down because it was old and diseased.

On one of his many daily walks around the park, local resident Grant Allen spotted the fallen tree and wanted to find a way to give new life back into the ash, and repurpose it for the benefit of the community.

Working with Friends of Ruskin Park and Lambeth Landscapes, Grant Allen and fellow local resident James Fincham, designed and hand-crafted a new contemporary bench using the wood from the trunk. The pictures tell the story of how it was done. Not your typical design, it’s 4.6m in length, with multiple seating positions and it will be a  unique new addition to Ruskin Park for families and friends to enjoy for years to come.

The Friends of Ruskin Park are most grateful to Grant and James for their vision of how to turn an old tree into a delightful place to rest and meet up and for their tenacity in making it happen.
