Update on park improvements
August 2022
Earlier this year Lambeth Council announced a £950,000 capital investment in improvements to Ruskin Park over the next few years. You can read our update from January 2022 including Lambeth’s presentation to our Annual General Meeting.
Friends of Ruskin Park has been attending the Steering Group to give a voice for park users. This is our report of the current progress by Lambeth:
- The paddling pool has re-opened this year, with Lambeth matching the funding raised by the Friends of Ruskin Park and the local community for the refurbishment works.
- Lambeth intends to refurbish the playground in the first half of 2023. Its size will be increased and in addition to serving 0 to 7 year olds, it will be designed to have more appeal to older children. A closure period will be inevitable, and we will push Lambeth to keep this to a minimum and to avoid school holidays.
- The nearby kiosk and toilets will also be renovated, including providing an accessible toilet. Access to these facilities will be eased.
- Condition surveys of footpaths and of lamp posts are being undertaken.
- Options are under consideration for redesign of the high fenced area opposite the playground, known as the redgra area. These include football and basketball pitches.
- While not included in the current programme, we continue to pursue with Lambeth the issues of the stable block’s future, the use of the old depot area and our concerns about water leaks and water supply problems across the park.
We intend to give further reports as more information is available.
