Ruskin Park’s Wheat Harvest
The Friends of Ruskin Park are growing heritage wheat and crops in Ruskin Park. Together with the Friends of Brixton Windmill and Brockwell Bake Association, the project brings alive the life cycle of natural and traditional food production.
Volunteers met at the start of August to harvest the three varieties of wheat and fava beans growing in the park. These were the crops we planted in February of this year, led by Andy from Brockwell Bake with the help of two shire horses.
A lovely evening was had by all, with a bread-based supper to share after all their hard work – thanks to everyone who came along to help out! You can see the wheat making an reappearance at this year’s Harvest Festival in Ruskin Park on 30th September, once it’s been milled at the Brixton Windmill. Details about the event will appear on the FoRP website soon.
